May Songwriting Challenge- Day 9; Rather Be Fishin’
During the first few days of this challenge, I’ve at least had an idea of what I was going to write. I’d come up with something on the drive to work or during my lunch hour, play around with the idea in my head, jot down a line or two, then wrap it all up at home. Today…that just didn’t happen. My glasses broke, I couldn’t focus at work, everything got on my nerves, our gym run wasn’t the most productive and while walking the dogs I just thought about how awesome it would be to have a glass of wine and go to bed. I was over today. Then I saw a boat passing on the Cumberland and though “ooh, I’d rather be fishing right now” and voila! There was my song idea. Remember, this is a challenge of quantity, not of any particular quality, so I did a speed-write, typing as my short little fingers would fly.

V1:
Met my new beau for a lunch date
Six weeks in, things were going great
‘Til he took a high dive straight off the deep end
We’d both been minding our P’s and Q’s
To keep it simple, let it bloom
Putter along ‘til we found where it was leadin’
He started gabbin’ ‘bout homes and gardens
Moved on to marriage roles
Panicked, real quick, I was wonderin’
Where this was headin, next thing I know
CH:
I was wavin’ down the waiter, “Could you split the check?
Here’s a twenty, keep the change” Turned around and said
“Boy, this talk about a woman’s place in the kitchen
It made me realize how much I’d rather be fishin”
V2:
Looking back, I thought about
How I should’ve watered it down
Broken out the classic, “It’s me, not you”
But it all happened so suddenly
I was a deer in the high beams
He handed me way more than I could chew
On the spot, with his ten-year plan
It became a matter of fight or flight
Knew that he’d never come to understand
I’m not exactly the apron type
CH:
I was wavin’ down the waiter, “Could you split the check?
Here’s a twenty, keep the change” Turned around and said
“Boy, this talk about a woman’s place in the kitchen
It made me realize how much I’d rather be fishin”
BR:
Sittin’ on the bank, feel a tug on the line
And on my heart strings
Some women are meant to be wives
But I’m so glad I made a break before he broke out a ring
CH:
Wavin’ down the waiter, “Could you split the check?
Here’s a twenty, keep the change” Turned around and said
“Boy, this talk about a woman’s place in the kitchen
It made me realize how much I’d rather be fishin”
Some girls they love to bake and fry up a chicken
But for me, no thanks, I’d rather be fishin
