May Songwriting Challenge-Day 1: Heart In A Bottle

A few days ago, a Facebook group that I had joined discussed a songwriting challenge. The challenge was to write a song every day for the month of May. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t write as often as I used to. Back when I was still in college, I’d write a few songs per day, though I’ll admit some of that was due to day dreaming in some of my general education courses. Heck, in high school I’d fill a notebook per month. Were they great songs? No. Most of them weren’t even good. However, I was writing and stretching my creative muscles.
When this challenge was discussed, I saw it as a chance to really hop back on the wagon and work on broadening my horizons. Instead of drilling myself, worrying about composing catchy music and trying to come up with something that may garner attention that would lead to a cut, I’m just going to write for the love of writing. So, friends, on Day 1 of this challenge, as I find myself longing the island, where I can just watch the waves and forget about my troubles, I wrote “Heart in a Bottle”, about letting go and finding yourself to the rhythm of the tide.

Tucked my heart in a bottle, tossed out in the surf
Always been more trouble, than what it’s worth
Watched it tick-tock rock into the sunset
Maybe now I’ll find some rest

Tucked my heart in a bottle, in hopes that the waves
Would carry it far beyond the breaks
Where it can roll in a gentle breeze
And for a blink in time be free

Gonna sit here for a while and plant
My road weary feet in the sand
Let my soul reset, rewind
Rising, falling with the tide
I’m sure someday the undertow
Will do its best to pull me home
‘til then I’ll wait another tomorrow
For the sea to return my heart in a bottle

Tucked my heart in a bottle, all sealed up tight
To keep it safe, from the stormy nights
‘Cause lord I know it gets off track
But sooner or later will bobble back

Gonna sit here for a while and plant
My road weary feet in the sand
Let my soul reset, rewind
Rising, falling with the tide
I’m sure someday the undertow
Will do its best to pull me home
‘til then I’ll wait another tomorrow
For the sea to return my heart in a bottle

Tucked my heart in a bottle, tossed out in the surf
Always been more trouble for what it’s worth
Watched it tick-tock rock into the sunset
Maybe now I’ll find some rest
