May Songwriting Challenge- Day 2: Hooks, Lines and Stinkers
As I stared at a blank sheet of paper this morning, yesterday’s gusto did not carry over. Driving into work, I was running through some ideas, staring out the windshield, and planning ahead for writing the rest of the month. As soon as I put my truck in park, I jotted down my thoughts, but this morning I wasn’t feeling any of them. Since I was having a hard time writing I thought “what better way to work through writing struggles than to write about writing?”. When I got my challenge notebook, I titled the first page “Hooks, Lines & Stinkers” as a place to jot down my concepts. What better title for a song about songwriting?

Some out there would think this life, is one of luxury
Sessions, nightly rounds, bankroll of royalties
You pour your heart, in an old guitar, for crowds going wild
With your prose, hit on the nose, no holds barred kind of style
It’s up-down, ‘round and ‘round, verse, chorus, verse
Sure they said it better but you know I said it first
Paying dues hoping that the next one you write
Will be CMA, ACM, Billboard big time
Fueled by the rhythm, wearing “dream cut” blinkers
And rolling down a river of hooks, lines and stinkers
When I moved to Nashville, thought it all would come
Together like a puzzle, but that’s not how it’s done
Got a dozen, dozen, almost somethings, I’ve laid to rest
Because I’ve learned, another’s worst, puts shame to my very best
It’s up-down, ‘round and ‘round, verse, chorus, verse
Sure they said it better but you know I said it first
Paying dues hoping that the next one you write
Will be CMA, ACM, Billboard big time
Fueled by the rhythm, wearing “dream cut” blinkers
And rolling down a river of hooks, lines and stinkers
And right here is where I’m supposed to stick a bridge
But this writer’s block is having none of it
It’s up-down, ‘round and ‘round, verse, chorus, verse
Sure they said it better but you know I said it first
Paying dues hoping that the next one you write
Will be CMA, ACM, Billboard big time
Fueled by the rhythm, wearing “dream cut” blinkers
And rolling down a river of hooks, lines and stinkers
