New Banner, New URL, New Music, Oh My!

Image
Sometimes it's just time for a change and when I looked at the blog the other day, I decided it was time for a revamp! We have been writing a lot recently, Aaron has studio time booked to record some new music, and it just felt like a good time to freshen things up a bit around here. While I loved my photo of my fender on the beach, I was feeling a different vibe. I also decided to finally edit my URL, so it will match my social media handle! Handle? Tag? Nickname? I don't know, but they match now! We love matchy-matchy things, don't we?! Be on the lookout for some new tunes that are on the way! I'm two lines away from finishing a sassy one that I can't wait to share with y'all! Thanks for the love over the years and I hope y'all enjoy this next phase of Just Keep Writing; The Journey of an Aspiring Songwriter !

Last Night’s Lipstick

Image
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to write around the line “Last Night’s Lipstick”. You may have noticed from my videos that I love a good lip color that pops…and one that can last all night. That’s the trick there. I’m not a dainty, delicate flower, don’t want to mess up my makeup kind of gal. I go out, eat, drink and have a good time. Sometimes my lipstick makes it through the night and I feel like a bit of a rockstar the next day. Well I’ve used the phrase “last night’s lipstick” a few times before this, but I never loved where it landed. It felt forced. So I jotted it down on my hook page in my notebook and thought “maybe someday I’ll revisit it”. That was during the songwriting challenge so I was grasping by mid month, but I never wrote on it during the challenge.  Then, one random night, it hit me to write it from a male perspective and something clicked. I was on the patio, drinking bourbon, listening to my favorite artist (I’ve said it was when the new album ...

Long Island

Image
I wrote this one a few weeks ago after having one of those rough days that leads to a long drive home with the radio off. I was feeling a bit defeated so I contemplated having a drink when I got home. However, after thinking about it for a few minutes I realized that I didn’t know what I wanted. I remembered about all the “tear in my beer” type of songs and realized a beer wouldn’t cut it, but my sassy little self quickly thought “what the hell, I’ll make a Long Island, something in the mix will help”. Within a few days of dabbling here and there, this song came together. Long Island  Chelsey Layton 2022 V1: Crazy how a mindless drive Could lead me across two state lines Three hundred miles, they go so fast When you replay all those “who I am”s On the outskirts, I found myself Some lounge in a no star hotel Local on a leanin’ stool Asked “girl what are we drinking to?” CH: It’s that hopeless and stuck in a rut Kind of lost a beer can’t touch And like ole grandad guard to say ...

Bring The Bourbon

Image
I wrote this one over the course of the past few months, after thinking that a Facebook comment that I made sounded catchy. I maybe I’ll get around to demoing it so I can rock it up a little more! Bring The Bourbon 2022 Chelsey Layton V1: Ain’t gone and said your name for prob’ly three months now I no longer double take at our stompin’ grounds Just when I think I’m past the point of never looking back Then you hit me, then you hit me, then you hit me with that Ch: Ring, ring, hey what ya doing tonight Thought we could maybe catch up, you know for old times Head says no, but this buzz says “ooo it may be worth it” Baby, you bring the bad ideas, I’ll bring the bourbon  Like a bad habit that I can’t replace yet You’re a double shot, mmmm, with a regret chaser My heart’s a racing, yeah it’s bracing for a hurtin’ Baby, you bring the bad ideas, I’ll bring the bourbon V2: My friends, they said our goodbye wouldn’t last very long Well, I’ve gotta half a mind to stand and prove em wro...
